U.S. News & World Report said the Mazda CX-3 had sporty handling, excellent fuel economy, and a premium interior. Meanwhile, the Crosstrek got dinged for seats that could use more support, lethargic acceleration and subpar handling.
The Mazda CX-3 won the fuel economy battle with an EPA-estimated 29 MPG city and 34 MPG highway, while Crosstrek came in at EPA-estimated 27 MPG city and 33 MPG highway.
The Crosstrek is the heavier of the two SUVS, weighing in at 3,157 pounds while the CX-3 came in at 2,809 pounds.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in Washington, D.C. awarded the 2019 Mazda CX-3 its Top Safety Pick+ award.
To earn the award, vehicles must be score well in front crash prevention systems, safety headlamps, airbag coverage and head restraint performance as assessed in crash tests.

The Mazda CX-3 earned solid ratings in crashworthiness tests, front crash prevention, and safety-focused headlights.

IIHS rated the Grand Touring package the second-highest rating for how well the headlights illuminate the road ahead. The IIHS also noted that models equipped with the Smart City Brake Support provide a superior level of front crash prevention.

Mazda CX-3 Safety Features
Every CX-3 comes standard with a rearview camera, low-speed automatic emergency braking, blindspot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert. Additional driver assistance features are available, including full-speed forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, adaptive headlights and adaptive cruise control. A traffic sign recognition system is available in the Grand Touring trim package.
The Mazda CX-3’s cabin is smartly designed, seating up to five people in cloth seating with upgrades available to synthetic or genuine leather seats in the higher trim packages, which also include heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat and a heated steering wheel.
